Cartier Home Front Spinel Brooch, 6.35 Carat

Bursting with patriotism, this original Cartier Home Front clip brooch features a 6.35-carat crimson spinel. Cartier's patented and illusory design gives the appearance of an American flag reflecting on the gold star-shaped body. The octagonal-shaped gemstone at the center of the brooch is certified by the American Gemological Laboratories as originating in Burma, with no gemological evidence of heat to enhance its vivid red hue. It is further distinguished by a rare and coveted appendix letter that highlights the gem's preeminent qualities. It states that the spinel "possesses a richly saturated "fiery" red color that distinguishes a fine spinel. Its superior color is further complemented by a finely crafted octagonal step cut form, resulting in richly vibrant internal color reflections and brilliance." Accented by diamonds at each of the star's five points, the brooch is crafted in 14K gold.

Associated with the organization Friends of Soldiers & Sailors, Cartier's innovative Home Front brooches were designed during World War II to promote patriotism and assist in the war effort. The Home Front design is discussed comprehensively in Penny Proddow and Debra Healy's 1987 publication American Jewelry: Glamour and Tradition, on pages 138-139.
