Paul Storr Silver and Cut Glass Cruet Set

Paul Storr
Silver Cruet Set
Hallmarked London, 1812

This elaborate silver and cut glass cruet set was crafted by famed London silversmith Paul Storr. Masterfully adorned with an array of Neoclassical design elements, this splendid set epitomizes the elegance and craftsmanship that made Paul Storr the greatest of the Georgian silversmiths.

A statuesque pair of glass cruets for oil and vinegar are mounted in silver with regal sphinx motifs atop their handles. Two glass condiment jars are topped with sophisticated silver covers, decorated with rounded finials and beaded trim. Four stoppered glass sauce bottles perfectly complete the set. All of the vessels are held within their banded silver compartments on the exquisitely decorated tray, topped with a beautifully beaded handle for easy transportation. Nearly every surface is covered with intricate beading and magnificent foliate motifs, and it is this elegant detailing that epitomizes Paul Storr's unparalleled excellence. This magnificent cruet set was once part of the iconic Red McCombs silver collection, which has been widely publicized and studied.

Storr is considered by many to be the greatest silversmith of his era and was the principal silversmith of Rundell, Bridge & Rundell, the Royal Jewelers and Silversmiths to their majesties George III, George IV and their extended families. Storr was renowned for his mastery of neoclassical design and symmetry, and he imparted into his beautiful, Greco-Roman-inspired works an unrivaled level of craftsmanship and quality.
