Tiffany Studios Woodbine Table Lamp

Woodbine Table Lamp
Tiffany Studios
Circa 1900

Among the great American design firms of the turn of the century, no name commands greater admiration than Tiffany Studios. Its works remain the pinnacle of the Art Nouveau movement, and this exquisite Woodbine table lamp exemplifies the organic elegance that defines Louis Comfort Tiffany’s most celebrated creations.

The richly mottled green and blue leaded glass shade is composed of cascading vine and leaf motifs inspired by the woodbine plant, a climbing vine admired for its twisting tendrils and graceful foliage. The shade is paired with its original bronze Ribbed Mushroom base, whose sculptural form complements the flowing contours above. When illuminated, the lamp reveals the remarkable depth, texture and tonal variation of Tiffany’s patented Favrile glass, qualities that distinguished the studio from all of its contemporaries.

This model was likely designed under the direction of Clara Driscoll, head of the Women’s Glass Cutting Department and one of the principal creative forces behind Tiffany’s most iconic lamps. Working alongside the talented artisans known as the “Tiffany Girls,” Driscoll helped shape some of the studio’s most enduring floral and naturalistic designs, of which the Woodbine remains one of the most elegant and sought after.
